General Medicine – SSMUs

Course Overview

The 6-year General Medicine (MBBS equivalent) program at Smolensk State Medical University is designed to build strong clinical competence through a structured combination of biomedical sciences, practical laboratory training, and hospital-based education. The curriculum begins with anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, and medical biology before progressing into pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, and clinical diagnostics. A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on developing practical examination and diagnostic skills through simulation facilities and specialized training laboratories before students enter clinical departments.

During the senior years, students undertake supervised clinical rotations in affiliated regional hospitals across internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, oncology, infectious diseases, and emergency medicine. The course also incorporates preventive healthcare, evidence-based medicine, and patient-centered care to strengthen clinical decision-making. Continuous practical assessments, bedside teaching, and mandatory internships ensure graduates develop the professional competence and confidence expected of modern medical practitioners.
