Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) – UAFMHS

Course Overview

The 6-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) program at the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences follows an integrated, patient-centred medical curriculum that combines foundational biomedical sciences with progressive clinical training. Students first develop a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, genetics, population health, and clinical sciences before transitioning into system-based medicine and patient care. A defining feature of the program is its early clinical exposure, where students interact with patients from the initial years while developing communication, examination, and clinical reasoning skills.

Training takes place across Auckland’s major teaching hospitals, community healthcare centres, and primary care clinics, providing experience in diverse healthcare settings. The curriculum emphasizes evidence-based medicine, Māori and Pacific health, interprofessional education, research, digital health, and preventive medicine alongside traditional clinical disciplines. During the senior years, students complete extensive clinical rotations in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, general practice, emergency medicine, and rural health before undertaking a trainee intern year that prepares graduates for supervised medical practice and postgraduate training.
